Saint John's United Church of Christ stands in a unique position. The Apostle Islands community has a long history of rugged pioneer spirit and individuality. Here on Madeline Island the early French trappers and traders established a rendez-vous, a gathering place to refresh themselves and enjoy each other's company.

Along with St. Joseph's, the island's Catholic Church, St. John's strives to be a church for the whole community. We serve those who call Madeline Island home — both year around and Summer residents — as well as the many visitors to the Apostle Islands archapalego. As a spiritual lighthouse in this land of so many lighthouses, our vision is clear:

  • To be a healing and nuturing church
  • To remember we are a rendez-vous place where cultures meet and nourish one another
  • To recognize and celebrate our diversity
  • To remember we are a place where people are sent out into the world
  • To become a caring-for-creation congregation
  • To be a church to the whole community in active partnership with St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

The island lighthouse which we call St. John's is here to help send our people out into the world refreshed and renewed as light to the world.
