I discovered
a photographic technique by accident one day.
While
capturing a sunset, I didn't realize the auto flash was on. The
result was not only the usual blazing sky but also an unexpected
light. Hidden in the darkening landscape was a blooming geranium
at my feet. However, when reflecting the bright flash from the
camera, this perennial suddenly dominated the scene.
In
its own power the geranium did not have the light to shine in
the overwhelming darkness. But reflecting the powerful light from
the camera it brightened its whole neighborhood.
To
brighten a piece of land, a gardener sows seed in the hope of
growing beautiful plants with the aid of God-given tools like
the sun and rain and good soil. Similarly, God sows His very nature
-- His light -- into the fertile ground of anyone who believes
in His Son Jesus Christ and the power of His resurrection. Christ,
the Light of the World, then shines through us onto others, reflected
in our words and deeds. Jesus Himself told us so.
Don't feel like a light? When
our light falters or grows dim remember Micah's encouragement:
When I fall, I will arise;
When I sit in darkness,
The Lord will be a light to me.
How, then, can we help but be
at peace even in times of deepest darkness? God is with
us! Rejoice with the prophet Isaiah:
Arise,
shine; For your light has come!
