Madeline Island Lighthouse
March & April, 1953

"Dear Friends of Lovely Madeline,

Now is the time for all good men and true to get ready to come again to our Island for the ice has almost completely disappeared except in sheltered places. The gulls are wheeling over the blue waters as of yore and the spring birds are back from the south land. Island men have been busy during the winter cutting timber and planks for the new dock and now are tearing out the rotten sections of the old dock. Three huge cribs, the base for the new section of the dock, are almost completed and will soon be towed in place and weighted down with rock and will replace the present south wing of the dock which has been in such bad condition that it was practically useless for the last few years. so by the time most of our summer folks arrive the dock should be in good shape.
Good news is also the fact that our roads are in much better condition than last year although there is still need of some new surface gravel in several places. Of further good news is also that the town election is over for another two years. This year's election was a close as they come. The race for town chairman ended in a tie between George Bissell and Elmer Nelson and was determined by lot as required by law. Elmer Nelson came out the winner at the toss of a coin. Other members elected to the board were: Emil Erickson, Nelson Dahlin, Mary Angus, Sally Erickson. The last two ran without opposition. Carl Myhre was again elected as assessor also without opposition.
Our hope and prayer is that all of these folks will do their best to make the Island a peaceful and happy place to live in doing their duty with a minimum of friction and maximum efficiency. Accepting an office of public trust is an honor that demands the very highest in character and deportment. Like a teacher or minister he is a leader and should know that he is always on the spot so to speak, and should therefore even more than others be a good example to others and permit himself to do only those things that promote the peace and welfare of the entire community.
We believe in Christian brotherliness as the basis of a good community. Well, that sounds like quite a sermon but what do you expect from a preacher but that he do his best to point the way to a good and blessed community where children naturally grow into good citizens and good Christians because that is what they see about them as they grow in manhood and womanhood.
More good news is that church attendance has been continually increasing which is all to the good as far as we are concerned.

Sincerely, your friend....Otto Schroedel
